An electric dab rig — also called an e-rig — is a battery-powered device that heats cannabis concentrate to its vaporisation point electrically, with no blowtorch. You load concentrate onto a heated element or into a chamber, the device reaches temperature on its own, and you inhale vapour, usually through water. It replaces the traditional torch-and-nail dab setup with a button and a battery.
How an electric dab rig works
- Charge and set the temperature. Most e-rigs offer preset heat levels.
- Load the concentrate into the heated chamber or onto the element when it reaches temperature.
- Inhale — the concentrate vaporises and the vapour draws through the mouthpiece, often via a water chamber for cooling.
- Recharge over USB — no torch, no butane.
The big advantages over a torch rig are consistency and safety: a precise, repeatable temperature instead of guessing with an open flame, and no need to wield a blowtorch.
Important: an e-rig vaporises — it doesn't combust
This is where we're careful with language. An electric dab rig vaporises concentrate; it does not combust dry herb. That makes it different from an electronic bong (eBong), which combusts dry flower to make real smoke. We describe each device honestly: the eBong is true combustion, the e-rig is concentrate vaporisation. If you want the full distinction, see vaping vs combustion. Calling an e-rig "combustion" would be wrong, and we don't do it.
E-rig vs nectar collector vs dab pen
| Device | What it is | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Electric dab rig (e-rig) | Tabletop/portable, water-cooled, preset temps | The fullest at-home concentrate experience |
| Electric nectar collector / dab straw | A heated straw you dip into concentrate | Quick, direct, minimal kit |
| Electric dab pen | Pocket pen with a concentrate chamber | Portability and discretion |
What to look for
- Temperature control — presets or precise control let you tune flavour vs vapour.
- Heat-up time — good e-rigs are ready in well under a minute.
- Battery life — sessions per charge, important for portability.
- Water filtration — many e-rigs use a small water chamber to cool the vapour.
- Easy cleaning — concentrate residue builds up; removable parts help.
Electric dab rig FAQ
Is an electric dab rig the same as an electronic bong?
No. An e-rig vaporises concentrate; an electronic bong combusts dry herb to make smoke. Different material, different process.
Do you still need a torch?
No — that's the point. An electric dab rig heats electrically, so there's no blowtorch and no butane.
Where can I find one?
